If you are in the market for a new job or are thinking about a career change, there are a number of ways where your network can provide value here.
Networking is a two-way street. Ask for help but also be open to offering help to others. If you have contributed to the success of your network they will be open to requests from you when you ask. When searching for a new job one of the best places to start is your network. You can ask them to review your resume, share any leads about new jobs or if it is somebody you have worked closely with in the past, ask for a referral or recommendation for a new position.
Utilize in-person events to learn about opportunities, positions and companies that interest you. You can use casual conversation to gain insights that could benefit your career.
In the digital era, LinkedIn makes it easy to search for company profiles and from there you can see both current and past employees of that company. If your existing connections are affilated with the company, use that connection and request an introduction to the hiring manager. If you don’t have a direct contact with the company you can often find a 2nd level connection as request an introduction.
Ask your network for inside information about a company — especially if you are considering taking an offer. You can gain valuable information about company culture and initiaves by simply asking those that would know.
As a subject matter expert, if you are sharing knowledge through a blog or social media channels this is a great way to showcase your talent to a potential employer. Your network may help by sharing the information you post.
Protecting Your Personal Image
According to a 2018 survey, 70 percent of employers use social media to screen candidates during the hiring process, and close to 43 percent of employers use social media to check on current employees.
Keep your social media profiles consistent and up to date. LinkedIn should reflect your current position and clearly demonstrate your past responsibilities. If you utilize other social media channels and keep them open to the public, make sure you are sharing content that aligns with your personal brand.
